Mobile app challenges visitors at the National Museum of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland has developed a new mobile app with Pocket-Proof.

The Museum Explorer iTunes app for iPods and iPhones challenges visitors to find the ugliest, fiercest, smelliest and oldest objects in the museum. Pocket-Proof developed the app with mobile development company Kotikan and staff at National Museums Scotland.

Visitors choose a category on their phone and then follow the clues to find the relevant object, which could be anywhere across the museum's 36 galleries. Object categories also include tallest, strongest, fairest and bloodiest.

Once they have tracked down an object, users will find a unique code to ‘unlock’ a special badge. They can share a photo of their discovery on social networks, framing their picture in a special picture frame. There are eight challenges to solve, with a ninth object unlocked when all the others are found.

Hugh Wallace, head of digital media National Museums Scotland, said: “We’re offering visitors an alternative and playful way of engaging with our objects, exploring the Museum and sharing their experiences.”
